{"id":1068,"date":"2013-04-04T10:44:32","date_gmt":"2013-04-04T10:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fleetwoodmac-uk.com\/wp\/?p=1068"},"modified":"2022-10-02T13:43:13","modified_gmt":"2022-10-02T12:43:13","slug":"fleetwood-mac-still-happy-together-despite-rumours-realities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fleetwoodmac-uk.com\/wp\/fleetwood-mac-still-happy-together-despite-rumours-realities\/","title":{"rendered":"Fleetwood Mac still happy together, despite \u2018Rumours\u2019 realities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The Columbus Dispatch<br \/>\nKevin Joy<br \/>\nThursday April 4, 2013 5:50 AM<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fleetwoodmac-uk.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/9-cover04-art-g5rmarkc-1ap110908152009.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1069\" alt=\"9-cover04-art-g5rmarkc-1ap110908152009\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fleetwoodmac-uk.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/9-cover04-art-g5rmarkc-1ap110908152009.jpg?resize=300%2C197\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Mick Fleetwood, the only band member to remain a constant since his namesake band\u2019s 1967 inception<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The modern rumor-mill media world, with its Twitter gossip and screaming TMZ headlines, has\u00a0nothing on the dramas of Fleetwood Mac.<br \/>\nAlthough its past is littered with divorces, drugs, lineup changes and lustful behavior \u2014<br \/>\nincluding a painful split between singer-guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and free-spirited frontwoman\u00a0Stevie Nicks \u2014 the ensemble hasn\u2019t buried its missteps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still choose to be more revealed than not,\u201d said drummer Mick Fleetwood, the only player to\u00a0remain a constant since his namesake band\u2019s 1967 inception. \u201cI think you\u2019d find in any of our\u00a0interviews, Stevie, and even Lindsey, are almost too open about things that are very personal,\u00a0really.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The enduring group is known just as much for refined pop-rock and blues music \u2014 in particular,\u00a0the aptly titled\u00a0<em>Rumours<\/em>, which was reissued last year.<\/p>\n<p>Released in 1977, the album recorded at the height of Fleetwood Mac\u2019s turmoil ultimately yielded\u00a0four Top 10 singles (<em>Don\u2019t Stop<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Dreams<\/em> among them) and, today, spawns a tour kicking off in Columbus.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Rumours<\/em>-era unit, reunited since 1997 \u2014 with the exception of keyboardist Christine McVie,\u00a0who retired one year later \u2014 has continued to go its own way.<\/p>\n<p>That stamina, said the 65-year-old Fleetwood, \u201creally is charged with some of the real<br \/>\nprinciples of people who have worked at being able to be together.\u00a0\u201cThis is a journey that is unfolding as we speak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He spoke to<br \/>\n<em>The Dispatch<\/em> before tonight\u2019s show in Nationwide Arena.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> What has it been like preparing for this tour?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> We\u2019re pretty much closing in on the last four to five days of rehearsal. We\u2019ve<br \/>\nbeen at it for about six weeks. No matter what you do, you\u2019re always down to the wire.\u00a0We\u2019ve done this a lot through the years. There\u2019s some anxieties \u2014 tweaking the set and\u00a0wondering: \u201cIs that the best song to do there; what would make it different for the audience?\u201d \u2014\u00a0but we\u2019ll be up and fighting. We always are. The band\u2019s playing beautifully.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Rumours<\/em> turned 35 last year. Was that motivation to hit the road again?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> We do it when we feel that this is really a cool thing \u2014 something that\u2019s worth<br \/>\na (expletive). That\u2019s the state of the nation with the four of us. We\u2019re all happy to perform. We\u00a0don\u2019t have to do it.\u00a0We\u2019re all in our 60s. We can\u2019t run this like a huge business, which is quite apparent. We have\u00a0to know that everything\u2019s OK as people \u2014 which, for all of our problems, .\u2009.\u2009. we are feeling\u00a0really good about all being together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> What are the dynamics of a Fleetwood Mac concert in 2013? Might we see laser<br \/>\nlights \u2014 or Stevie Nicks flying across the arena in a gilded cage?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> Unless I fell asleep during the \u201970s, which is highly probable, we\u2019ve never\u00a0been the sort of band that had their production be the reason someone comes to see us.\u00a0Having said that, we\u2019re blessed to be able to make a really good effort. It has become grander,\u00a0the technology we draw on. We don\u2019t have firebombs \u2014 simple lights, some bigger screens than we\u00a0ever used.\u00a0It\u2019s going to be really aesthetically tasteful, to complement the songs in a holistic way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> Why do listeners still maintain such a close connection with\u00a0<em>Rumours<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> It is extraordinary that the album seems to rebirth itself quietly all the\u00a0time. And, now (with the 2012 reissue), it\u2019s been really rebirthed in a quite profound way.\u00a0One has to say that it\u2019s a body of work that, sonically, does not age. Thank goodness we did not\u00a0put all those cheap \u201970s and \u201980s effects with plastic drums, that sort of stuff. You don\u2019t really\u00a0know where this album was made.\u00a0It\u2019s just very pure. There isn\u2019t a lot of hype in the way we produced that album, a lot of care\u00a0with the layering. The songs and the scenes and the story really seemed to take on almost a part of\u00a0a responsibility of representing a generation.\u00a0That album became an iconic signpost for a lot of things that have nothing to do with music.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> An allusion to the musicians\u2019 chaotic offstage lives?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> This album opened a door that is still wide-open. I think the songs were\u00a0well-crafted: Just when you think this could be getting a little sweet and cute, whatever they call\u00a0accessible pop music, you suddenly realize it\u2019s not.\u00a0Fleetwood Mac inherently has a dark side \u2014 these five people, now four, in a life puzzle. We\u00a0were probably fairly naive in many ways. I think people identify with that. They\u2019re invested in our\u00a0story as people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:<\/strong> How would you describe the relationship among band members today?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> It\u2019s all good, and it\u2019s always interesting. We don\u2019t always see eye to eye on\u00a0bits and pieces. One of the biggest misconceptions with all the ups and downs and inroads and<br \/>\nso-called horror stories \u2014 the one thing people forget is that we actually really love each<br \/>\nother.\u00a0You see Stevie and Lindsey up there, knowing they\u2019ve had huge differences of opinion. But they\u2019re there.
