She\u2019s only<br \/>\nfrightened of one of them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cOh my God, it\u2019s getting worse!\u201d the Fleetwood Mac singer exclaims of the<br \/>\never-increasing popularity of the cosmetic procedure. Nicks, who is 65,<br \/>\ntried it herself some years ago. Her conclusion?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cBotox makes everybody look like Satan\u2019s children. You\u2019d have to tie me down<br \/>\nto get me to do it again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cNow we\u2019re getting used to seeing people with eyebrows that start up here,\u201d<br \/>\nshe snorts, jabbing at her hairline, the famous long and still-lustrous<br \/>\nblonde locks flowing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Nicks turns her gaze away from the Pacific sunset we\u2019ve been enjoying from our<br \/>\nreclining chairs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cYou have an 18-year-old daughter, right?\u201d She raises a finger in my<br \/>\ndirection. \u201cYou tell your daughter: if she ever even thinks about Botox, you<br \/>\nget me on the phone and I\u2019ll talk to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicks is as warm and empathetic in person as her endless hit songs (<i>Dreams,<br \/>\nRhiannon, Edge of Seventeen<\/i>) suggest. She is relaxed in black, drapey<br \/>\nlounge-wear and dark, tinted glasses.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Her manner is a combination of floaty New Agey-ness and quick-witted humour.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.telegraph.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/02671\/BAND_2671290c.jpg?w=474\" \/><br \/>\nNicks with Fleetwood Mac in 1975 (second from right)<\/p>\n<p>It is late July and Fleetwood Mac\u2019s 2013 world tour is on a short summer break<br \/>\nbefore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=11&amp;cad=rja&amp;ved=0CCwQFjAAOAo&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.telegraph.co.uk%2Fpromotions%2F10244731%2FMore-tickets-now-on-sale-for-Fleetwood-Mac-Tour.html&amp;ei=CeMyUuupNMPt0gW52YDoCg&amp;usg=AFQjCNFgkWJgEi5EfZ8qf-uUae2P9-pWMw\">hitting\u00a0Britain<\/a>. Nicks and her assistant, Karen, have duly retreated to the<br \/>\nbeach.<\/p>\n<p>From her panoramic windows she can watch the cars twinkling down the Pacific<br \/>\nCoast Highway at night. \u201cI call it the diamond snake when it\u2019s coming toward<br \/>\nyou, and when the traffic\u2019s going away it\u2019s the ruby snake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicks also owns a 1930s \u201cEnglish-style\u201d mansion in the nearby hills, where she<br \/>\nlets her nearest and dearest retreat. Three years ago she recorded a solo<br \/>\nalbum there, \u201c<i>In Your Dreams<\/i>\u201d, with the producer and former<br \/>\nEurythmic Dave Stewart.<\/p>\n<p>But this apartment, with its 180-degree views up and down Santa Monica Beach,<br \/>\nis where Nicks comes to recharge.<\/p>\n<p>Fleetwood Mac have sold upwards of 100 million albums. When 1976\u2019s \u201c<i>Rumours<\/i>\u201d<br \/>\n(which has sold 40 million copies) was re-released this year, it went back<br \/>\ninto the album charts at number three.<\/p>\n<p>Forty years at the top have made the band very rich \u2013 rich enough for Mick<br \/>\nFleetwood reportedly to have blown $8 million on cocaine over the years, and<br \/>\nfor Nicks to own multiple properties.<\/p>\n<p>This apartment used to be somebody\u2019s bachelor pad, and the high-tech<br \/>\nentertainment system that the previous owner installed has been a bit of a<br \/>\nproblem. Nicks, a self-confessed luddite, only recently bought her first<br \/>\nmobile phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to escape a fire in Malibu a couple of years ago. That\u2019s when I<br \/>\nrealised I had to have one. Now I do have a cellphone. It\u2019s not charged, but<br \/>\nit\u2019s over there somewhere. I did say to Karen, &#8216;Shouldn\u2019t we plug this thing<br \/>\nin, just in case?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicks is even contemplating going online. \u201cJust \u2019cause I don\u2019t like the<br \/>\ninternet doesn\u2019t mean that everybody\u2019s gonna stop using it.\u201d She pouts with<br \/>\na self-mocking air.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I\u2019m starting to think: &#8216;You know what? Am I just punishing myself? I might<br \/>\nas well know how to do it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fleetwood Mac \u2013 Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham on guitar, John McVie on bass and<br \/>\nMick Fleetwood on drums (all but Christine McVie from the \u201cclassic\u201d line-up)<br \/>\n\u2013 have been on the road since spring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo hours and 40 minutes, every night \u2013 for 47 nights!\u201d says Nicks with a<br \/>\ngasp. Such is the ongoing love for the Anglo-American group that 15 extra<br \/>\nshows were added to the tour.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.telegraph.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/02671\/YOUNG_2671304c.jpg?w=474\" \/><br \/>\nNicks in 1975<\/p>\n<p>Nicks is enjoying it now. \u201cBut in the beginning, before the shows, truly, I\u2019d<br \/>\nlook at Lindsey as we were going up to the stage in the lift and go, &#8216;This<br \/>\nis too much for me.\u2019 And he\u2019d go, &#8216;What do you want me to say?\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And I\u2019d go, &#8216;Well, I don\u2019t know, some sympathy would be good. Something<br \/>\nlike, \u201cI know you\u2019re an old woman and this is hard on you \u2013 but you\u2019ll get<br \/>\nthrough it!\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Nicks knows Buckingham better than that. They met as teenagers in<br \/>\nnorthern California in 1965. He was the high-school swimming champ and a<br \/>\nprodigal guitarist; she was the girl from Arizona, relocated to the San<br \/>\nFrancisco area thanks to her father\u2019s corporate executive job.<\/p>\n<p>They became friends, then bandmates, then, finally, a couple.<\/p>\n<p>As part of a four-piece band called Fritz, they opened for acts including<br \/>\nJanis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, whom she remembers looking in her direction<br \/>\nbefore announcing: \u201cI\u2019m dedicating a song to that girl over there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a moment of greatness,\u201d she sighs. \u201cI give him and Janis Joplin and<br \/>\nGrace Slick [of Jefferson Airplane] the three nods. From Grace, I got her<br \/>\nkinda slinkiness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Janis was just little with a big attitude with big hair and feathers,<br \/>\nand a drop-dead amazing voice. She was really tough but sang like a bird and<br \/>\ncould really hold that audience in her hand.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And Jimi Hendrix, on the other side of that, was completely and utterly<br \/>\nhumble\u2026 So from those three people I got slinky, attitude and humility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throw in the most directional deployment of scarves and chiffon in music<br \/>\nhistory, \u201cand that was kinda my stage performance,\u201d she says with a shrug. A<br \/>\nrock\u2019n\u2019roll icon was born.<\/p>\n<p>Having moved to Los Angeles, in 1974 Nicks and Buckingham joined the British<br \/>\nblues band Fleetwood Mac, who were then living in the city. Famously, three<br \/>\nlong-term relationships ended during the making of \u201c<i>Rumours<\/i>\u201d,<br \/>\nincluding Nicks and Buckingham\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.telegraph.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/02671\/COUPLE_2671294c.jpg?w=474\" \/><br \/>\nNicks with Lindsey Buckingham, 1975<\/p>\n<p>But the band soldiered on through the heartache, the romantic turbulence<br \/>\nhelping to create some of the most emotional yet melodic and uplifting music<br \/>\never.<\/p>\n<p>Stevie went on to have relationships with, among others, two members of The<br \/>\nEagles (Don Henley and Joe Walsh) and even had a fling with Mick Fleetwood.<\/p>\n<p>Buckingham is now married with three young children, but the spark between him<br \/>\nand Nicks never went away, in ways good and bad. During the making of<br \/>\nFleetwood Mac\u2019s 2003 album \u201c<i>Say You Will<\/i>\u201d they had a<br \/>\nfalling-out from which they\u2019d never fully recovered.<\/p>\n<p>So, prior to this year\u2019s tour, Nicks decided they needed to clear the air. She<br \/>\nduly invited her first love over for a pre-tour summit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a lot talk to about, he and I,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I said to him: &#8216;I<br \/>\nbelieve that you and I need to remember who we were when we were 16 and 17<br \/>\nyears old. We need to remember that we were really good friends before we<br \/>\never had a date.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to remember how much we respected each other, how much fun we<br \/>\nhad \u2013 and how much fun we can have when we\u2019re both in good spirits. And we<br \/>\nneed to take that power couple on to the stage. Or we need to not go on<br \/>\ntour.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Did Buckingham agree with that?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe listened to me, and I\u2019m just sorry we didn\u2019t have this conversation 10 or<br \/>\neven 20 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The heart-to-heart did its job. \u201cWe are having fun,\u201d she says, clearly<br \/>\ndelighted at the late-flowering harmony in this legendarily dysfunctional<br \/>\nband.<\/p>\n<p>As Buckingham recently put it, describing the American leg of the tour, \u201cIt\u2019s<br \/>\na little bit of a love-fest up there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicks has legendary status as one of the first female rock stars. She sang<br \/>\nwith Taylor Swift at the 2010 Grammy Awards, an experience a besotted Swift<br \/>\ndescribed as \u201ca fairytale\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Nicks also appeared in the video for <i>Bootylicious<\/i> by Destiny\u2019s Child, a<br \/>\nsong that samples her own 1981 composition <i>Edge Of Seventeen<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyonc\u00e9\u2019s great. She\u2019s got her alter ego [her stage persona, Sasha Fierce],<br \/>\nbut Beyonc\u00e9 the girl, the woman, is very sweet and nice and polite. She\u2019s a<br \/>\ngood role model. She\u2019s not skanky. I\u2019m glad we have her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.telegraph.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/02671\/TAYLOR_2671312c.jpg?w=474\" \/><br \/>\nSinging with Taylor Swift at the 2010 Grammys<\/p>\n<p>The appeal of Fleetwood Mac\u2019s music to a younger generation was underscored by<br \/>\nthe 2011 Glee episode devoted to \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u7DgLPfuInw\">Rumours<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Nicks visited the television show\u2019s Los Angeles set during filming, and grew<br \/>\nclose to the cast. After Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, died of a<br \/>\nheroin overdose in July, Nicks wrote the cast a letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, &#8216;Forgive me if I\u2019m stepping into your personal space. I lost my<br \/>\ngodson to an overdose last year \u2013 he died at a fraternity party \u2013 so I do<br \/>\nunderstand how shocking that is.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When what happened to Cory happened, I just was sick for days. Honestly,<br \/>\njust sick. It\u2019s just so prevalent. It\u2019s everywhere. It\u2019s worse than when we<br \/>\nwere young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s certainly saying something, given how notoriously hard-partying<br \/>\nFleetwood Mac were throughout most of the 1970s and 1980s. Nicks recalls<br \/>\nthat they were warned of the dangers of heroin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I wish people had told us the same thing about cocaine. But in our day<br \/>\neverybody was going, &#8216;It\u2019s not addictive, it\u2019s just recreational fun, blah<br \/>\nblah blah.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The band\u2019s cocaine habit led to Nicks becoming addicted to the drug for 10<br \/>\nyears. Then, in 1986, after being prescribed the sedative clonazepam to wean<br \/>\nher off it, she became addicted to that. Nicks says that its effects were<br \/>\neven more ruinous. Her weight ballooned, her skin peeled, her hair fell out,<br \/>\nshe became a quasi-recluse.<\/p>\n<p>She lost eight years to clonazepam, and often wonders if she might have met<br \/>\nsomeone and started a family in that time if she hadn\u2019t been so zonked out.<br \/>\n\u201cThat was stolen,\u201d she says of the chance to find happiness in that period.<br \/>\n\u201cAnd that\u2019s not forgivable, ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet for all her enmity towards the health professionals who prescribed<br \/>\nclonazepam to her, Nicks is content to be single now \u2013 and blessed with<br \/>\n\u201clots of little fairy goddaughters\u201d. And, as she points out, \u201cI didn\u2019t die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicks managed to come back from her addictions. \u201cI think that I\u2019m stronger<br \/>\nthan a lot of people,\u201d she adds. \u201cAnd I knew then, as I know now, that I<br \/>\nstill have so much to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As well as completing the second half of the Fleetwood Mac world tour (which<br \/>\nruns until the end of this year), Nicks is working on plans to release a<br \/>\nlong-lost pre-Mac album that she and Buckingham made as Buckingham Nicks,<br \/>\nthe duo they\u2019d formed after Fritz.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.telegraph.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/02671\/MAC_2671300c.jpg?w=474\" \/><br \/>\nTaking a bow with Fleetwood Mac in Philadelphia in April this year<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s also an enthusiastic painter (of angels, mainly), a poet and a reader,<br \/>\nand is hoping to realise a long-cherished dream: to turn The Mabinogion<br \/>\nTetralogy, four obscure books based on Welsh myths, into a mini-series.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s owned the rights to the novels for over 30 years and is hopeful that the<br \/>\nmakers of her favourite television show, Game of Thrones, will be interested<br \/>\nin turning them into a screenplay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lived in the Twilight world for, gosh, four or five years. But Game Of<br \/>\nThrones is just\u2026 heavier,\u201d she says, eyes a-flutter. \u201cAnd season three \u2013 the<br \/>\nbrutality is over the top!\u201d she hoots, delighted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dragons are growing, and the characters are all brilliant. I mean,\u201d she<br \/>\nwhispers, \u201cI think of them like they\u2019re real people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicks has duly done what she\u2019s always done and put pen to paper. \u201cI\u2019ve written<br \/>\na bunch of poetry for each of the characters in Game Of Thrones.
