The two 70s bands break into the top ten for US earnings in 2013<\/h2>\n

Fleetwood Mac and the Rolling Stones are the only British bands to break intothe top ten of an annual list ranking recording artists by their US earnings\u00a0for 2013, earning more than younger superstars One Direction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The list, compiled by American magazine Billboard, sees Fleetwood Mac ranked\u00a0tenth with earnings of $19.1m, while the Stones came fifth with $26.2m. One\u00a0Direction sat at thirteenth with $18.0m, though all three were beaten by\u00a024-year-old Taylor Swift, who was the top-ranked star with an annual total\u00a0of $39.7m.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Touring, recorded-music sales, publishing royalties, and revenue from digital\u00a0music and video streaming were all taken into account when the earnings were\u00a0calculated, although revenue from sponsorship and merchandise was not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Rolling Stones\u2019 earnings were thanks to a lucrative deal with American\u00a0company AEG Live, who allegedly paid the band $80m to secure the promotional\u00a0rights to 15 shows in the 2013 50th anniversary tour. The band are rumoured\u00a0to have earned a further $5m through their tour partnership with Citi group.\u00a0Each show grossed an average of $4.7m<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Despite their age, the Stones still sold 1.5 million track downloads and sold\u00a0300,000 CDs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Fleetwood Mac\u2019s presence on the list is due to their 2013 world tour, which\u00a0earned them $17.4 million. They also made money from the release of new a\u00a0EP, Extended Play, which was released for digital download.<\/p>\n

The band\u2019s nationality is more complicated than that of the Rolling Stones.\u00a0Original members were British nationals Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Jeremy\u00a0Spencer, and Peter Green, who were responsible for the band\u2019s debut album\u00a0Albatross in 1968.<\/p>\n

They were later joined by McVie\u2019s wife, Christine McVie and American\u00a0singer-songwriters Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.<\/p>\n

Rumours, produced in 1977, remains one of the best-selling albums of all time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
