Released in 1989, the album peaked at #3 on the UK album chart and #10 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA for shipments of over 1,000,000 copies and certified Gold in the UK for sales over 100,000.This album received the remaster treatment by Rhino in 2023.

A remastered edition of the album was released in 2023 as part of The Complete Studio Albums and Rarities collection that was available on vinyl and CD. This collection also contained b-sides from the album sessions.
The album was recorded in Los Angeles, California and mixed in Buckinghamshire, England.
The album is loosely based around the theme of Lewis Carroll's 1865 novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
