THE father of the Mac Mick Fleetwood tells our reporter how his bohemian childhood still inspires him and the band

Mick Fleetwood and I are taking tea in a stylish hotel overlooking London’s Hyde Park. We are talking about his father Mike, who died in 1978 aged 62. Suddenly, Mick spots something out of the window.

“See the horses?” he says, looking out of the window and leaping out of his chair to point them out to me.

“It’s so cool, talking about Daddy and there he is!” Knowing the somewhat colourful background of Fleetwood and his eponymous band (past issues with cocaine and alcohol, for example), you could be forgiven for thinking the drummer had flipped.

But no. What we are looking at is the Household Cavalry crossing the park in the autumn sunshine, breastplates gleaming.

“He was a Royal Horse Guard and he used to make that same ride. Mummy (his mother Biddy, now 97) used to sit in the building that’s now the Mandarin Oriental Hotel over there when she was a young woman,” he points, “and she watched those men on the horses crossing the park and she ended up being with my dad. Fleetwood Mac announce extra Manchester date for UK 2015 tour | Digital Spy

Fleetwood Mac have added an extra Manchester show to their 2015 UK tour following high demand.

The band have already added extra London dates to the tour.

‘On With The Show’ sees Christine McVie returning to the line-up after 16 years.

The band are currently touring the US without McVie, with 70 shows there before the 15-gig European leg of the tour begins on May 27, 2015 and continues through to July 1.

It follows McVie rejoining the band in 2013 at the O2 to perform ‘Don’t Stop.’

Speaking after the performance, McVie said: “It was so comfortable being back onstage with them as if no time had passed, and then we all started talking and it feels like the time is right. I’m really happy.”

The rest of Fleetwood Mac added in a statement: “As far as we’re concerned, she’s never really left. We are overjoyed to have Christine back onstage with us.”

Dates in Birmingham, Glasgow and London added to meet huge demand

Due to phenomenal demand, Fleetwood Mac have added more dates at  to their 2015 UK tour. Full dates and ticket details are below. 

The ‘Don’t Stop’ returning rock icons are hitting the road next summer with their ‘classic’ Rumours line-up featuring Christine McVie, and after tickets went on sale this morning, they’ll now play a longer string of dates across the UK.

These include a second night at Birmingham’s LG Arena on June 9, an extra night at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro on June 17, as well two extra shows at the O2 Arena London on June 22 and 24.

Fleetwood Mac return to the UK and Europe with new tour dates….

Following a record sell out tour in 2013, rock legends Fleetwood Mac are set to return to the UK in 2015 with their ‘On With The Show’ Tour. Currently on the road in the US, the phenomenally successful ‘On With The Show’ tour is presently clocking in at almost 70 shows across the country. Currently performing with their five star lineup, Fleetwood Mac will be joined by returning songbird Christine McVie following a 16 year absence.

The European run will begin on 27th May 2015 at The O2, London and will stop in Amsterdam, Cologne, Antwerp, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Dublin culminating in Leeds on 30th June. Tickets go on general sale on Friday 14th November 2014 from www.livenation.co.uk

Stevie Nicks – 24 Karat Gold

Old, half-finished songs picked up, dusted down and fully realised by Nicks in all her croaky, wizened glory.

With her first LP since 2011’s In Your Dreams, Nicks has decided to revisit some old demos to give them the full studio work-up.

Comprising songs almost exclusively written between 1969 and 1987, what could have been a rushed cash-in is instead a crafted, worthwhile document.

Raking over her earlier songwriting chops proves a canny move, and there’s plenty here that will appeal.

Her now gently burnished vocals lend appropriate weight to the weary, wistful casino worker in The Dealer, in which downcast guitar and piano back lines like “If I’d have known a little more I’d have run away,” while she croakily dispenses some hard-won wisdom from a scarred heart over gritty guitar in Hard Advice.

Although it outstays its welcome at 15 tracks, the range is wide enough to take in freaky Hammond organ solos on Starshine – the album’s galloping, bittersweet opener – intimate, stream-of-consciousness frustration and exasperation in Mabel Normand and a hard, funky guitar riff that Rage Against The Machine wouldn’t sniff at (the six-minute barnstormer I Don’t Care).

Her intimate delivery frequently disarms, be it alongside Mac-style vocal harmonies in Carousel, recorded for Nicks’ mother, or the soul-baring uncertainty of Lady, a simple acoustic ballad with plodding piano.

A slinky, upbeat Mississippi bar feel excites in Cathouse Blues and there’s an elegant drive to the title track.

In spite of its length, these reshaped, refined offcuts only serve to bolster Nicks’ impressive catalogue.

Fleetwood Mac were sitting around stoned in the studio one night with one of their engineers when they set about solving an arithmetic problem that had been niggling at them.

How much cocaine, they wondered, had drummer Mick Fleetwood put up his nose? Working on the premise he had taken an eighth of an ounce every day for 20 years, the sound engineer calculated that if you laid out the drug in a single snortable line, it would stretch for seven miles.

Rock ’n’ roll is full of such apocryphal stories, but as Fleetwood admits in a candid new memoir, this one is completely true. But then, this is the band that in 1977 gave the world Rumours, one of the best-selling albums ever, and almost died in the process.

Band were among the favourites to play at next year’s festival

The band have remained one of the favourites to top the bill at the event next year, though Michael Eavis has stated in recent weeks that the chances of the band headlining were looking unlikely.

All doubt has now been removed now though, with Fleetwood telling Chris Evans on BBC Radio 2 this morning (November 7) that the group will not be one of the three headliners.

“One of the things that I’d like to clear up is that we’re not playing Glastonbury,” he said. “A lot of folks think that we are, so loud and clear: We love Glastonbury and all the surrounding history of such a lovely festival but we’re not playing it.”

THERE IS A WORD THAT POPS UP MORE than once in conversation with Mick Fleetwood, a word that does not usually surface in conversations with other rock’n’roll stars. That word is “intact” — defined by at least one source as “not damaged or impaired in any way”.

It is a word that has special relevance when your band is a few years scant of celebrating its 50th anniversary, when it has sold more records than nearly anyone, when its colourful cast of characters comprises the most visible ongoing soap opera in the annals of rock, and time, as always, takes its inevitable toll.

To cut to the chase: everything in Mick Fleetwood’s world this August morning appears to be intact. He is, as always, tall, lanky, polite, happy to do whatever is required of him as a photo shoot takes place on the premises of this lovely large, hilariously photogenic Santa Monica estate, and in fine spirits. His is very popular band is rehearsing for their first tour with celebrated member Christine McVle in 16 years, and that is no small thing: This core group of five Fleetwood Mac members Fleetwood, McVle and her ex-husband John, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks got together in 1975, recorded a series of famous albums that sold billions, took rock’n’roll from the cover of Rolling Stone and plopped it onto People, influenced an entire generation of future white-winged doves enraptured by Ms Nicks, and then seemed to putter out in a strangely non-elegant manner in the mid ’90s when Dave Mason walked in. Cocaine, affairs, reckless spending – Mick Fleetwood was the epitome of the rock ’n’ roll egomaniac. How did he, and his band, survive?

I am waiting for Mick Fleetwood in a mansion that he has rented in Malibu. It is the size of a stately home. I am sitting in the kitchen, which is painted in ice-cream colours: pistachio, strawberry and vanilla. He arrives shower fresh. He is as long and thin as you imagine him.

In his new autobiography, Play On, Fleetwood says that he’s 6ft 6in. He looks even taller, languid in navy chinos, a blue striped shirt with epaulettes, a gold medallion, a perfectly trimmed beard and a burnt copper tan.

The medallion is a scarab made by a goldsmith in Canterbury, and, Fleetwood tells me, a symbol of immortality because Ancient Egyptian scarabs, which are still being dug up by archaeologists, “survive against hopeless odds”. You could say the same about his band, Fleetwood Mac.

Fleetwood Mac may have just started a mammoth tour of the United States, their first with songbird Christine McVie in 17 years, but Stevie Nicks has still managed to release a new solo album, this month.

24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault, is a collection of 14 songs from Nicks’ enormous back catalogue of demos that never made it onto her records- songs which were written between 1969 and 1995.

Recorded over a three-month period, Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart was once again on production duties.
