Editor’s Note: This is a review of a live stream event performed earlier this month by Lindsey Buckingham. It consisted of a Q&A ahead of the concert, then an intimate show performed from his home studio in L.A.

Question and Answer Session:

When can we expect new music, and where will you be touring
The album that we will be releasing in the near future is something that has been waiting in the wings for about three years now. For now, we are talking about the United States, Europe, and Australia, which is more than I’ve ever done as a solo artist.

Future collaborations?
Maybe a duet album with a younger female artist, yet to be determined. Even Mick Fleetwood and I were talking about doing a project together, so who knows? There’s still lots of time.

Do you have a favorite song that you do live where you really like to “shred” it?
There are two kinds of shredding. I always love doing something like “Big Love” or “Never Going Back Again,” which represents the full orchestral style with just one instrument. Then there’s lead guitar shredding. I always love “I’m So Afraid.” Those three songs have been re-envisioned and re-engineered for the stage.

How did you create your guitar style?
I was completely self-taught, so there was nobody there to tell me that I had to use a pick. It comes down to the music I happened to be exposed to, but probably more importantly because I made my own way and made my own rules.

What was your biggest contribution to Fleetwood Mac?

Former Fleetwood Mac guitarist sang four songs via Zoom, including “Never Going Back Again”

Lindsey Buckingham sings for the first time since 2019 heart surgery

Lindsey Buckingham has kept a low profile since he was sidelined by emergency heart surgery in February 2019, but he re-emerged on Friday for a four-song acoustic set via Zoom for the tech company Nutanix.

Buckingham played the Fleetwood Mac songs “Never Going Back Again” and “Big Love,” along with his solo cuts “Trouble” and “Shut Us Down,” marking the first time he’s sung in public since the operation.

“This [pandemic] has been like a couple of years previous in which things occurred that I did not see coming,” he said. “One was my split from Fleetwood Mac. Another one was having a bypass operation, which I did not expect to happen. You could say that this makes it a trifecta of events that were completely off the charts.”

Buckingham’s vocal cords were damaged during the bypass operation. “While it is unclear if the damage is permanent, we are hopeful it is not,” Buckingham’s wife Kristen said in a statement at the time.

His first post-surgery appearance took place at his daughter’s high school graduation ceremony where he played “Landslide,” but the students handled all the vocals. He also announced a solo tour in February 2020 for April and May but had to cancel due to the pandemic.

“There are things that are going to happen that you cannot control,” Buckingham says. “There certainly is a lesson in acceptance there, but there’s also a lesson in looking for what is really essential within those circumstances. Yes, I’ve got my talent and my artistic process that I value greatly…Beyond that, I’m here every day with my wife and my children and that is the gift that is essential to all of this. That becomes the silver lining. You are gently, or not-so-gently, reminded of essentials.”

Near the end of the broadcast, Buckingham gave an update on his solo record. “I do have an album coming out,” he said. “We’re waiting to see where this is all going. We don’t have a release date. I was meant to be out on the road now promoting it. It should be out in the spring sometime. It’s just self-titled: Lindsey Buckingham. We’ll see where that goes.”

As part of the 20th anniversary of this website being active, we are sharing a rare collection of promo videos and live clips from Lindsey Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac.

This collection was curated by me many years ago onto DVD from various live and promo video clips, I cannot recall exactly when this collection was put together, but I suspect around 2003 and the Say You Will era from the latest collection of clips on this compilation.

I had traded this DVD many times in the years of snail mail trades and I have seen this collection being sold on auction sites in the past (tut tut), but this is the first time that I have put this collection out for download, and being the 20th anniversary of this site and Lindsey’s current health complications, now seems a  pretty good time to share. Lindsey Buckingham Reveals Stories Behind His Solo Songs And Whether He’ll Ever Rejoin Fleetwood Mac | Stereogum

“It certainly has been … a surprising year,” Lindsey Buckingham joked from the stage at Manhattan’s Town Hall last week. Fleetwood Mac’s erstwhile singer and guitarist is playing shows in support of Solo Anthology, a career-spanning collection that’s somehow his first-ever hits package 37 years into a successful solo career.

The just-released 6xLP version of the set marks the first time some of his most beloved songs have been available on vinyl, too. But the big surprise this year is that Fleetwood Mac are also on tour, without him.

Buckingham and his fans were shocked when, following an all-star tribute concert in January, he was unceremoniously kicked out of the band via a phone call from manager Irving Azoff at Stevie Nicks’ behest. Neil Finn and Mike Campbell were hired to replace him and consequently Fleetwood Mac shows now include songs by Crowded House, Split Enz, and Tom Petty. The silver lining is that Buckingham was freed up to do this solo tour featuring some tunes he had never before played live.

From 1981’s Law And Order to last year’s collaborative LP with Mac bandmate Christine McVie, along with a handful of movie soundtrack contributions, Solo Anthology is an overdue showcase for the more adventurous side of Fleetwood Mac’s principal songwriter and arranger, not to mention his blazing fingerstyle guitar work. While he was in NYC, I sat down with the 69-year-old father of three at a restaurant near Central Park to learn the stories behind a selection of his solo tracks, get an update on his lawsuit against Fleetwood Mac (he revealed it was settled a few weeks ago), and find out what’s next for one of rock’s most gifted guitarists.

“Trouble” (1981)

STEREOGUM: “Trouble” was your first solo single. You played basically everything on Law And Order, but “Trouble” had George Hawkins on bass and a drum loop from Mick Fleetwood.

BUCKINGHAM: It was probably a departure from much of that album, and much of what I am not as much a fan of about it now is that it was kind of a reaction to the political climate in a post-Tusk environment. In a moment when I realized the only way I was going to explore the left side of my palate was to do solo work, Law And Order was a bit, shall we say, sarcastic as a body of work, a bit camp, maybe a bit too camp, almost verging on a comedy album in some ways in terms of the irony that was there and the sensibility. “Trouble” was a song that was very absent of that, and that’s probably one reason that they picked it out as a single. Lindsey Buckingham revealed in a new interview that he has settled his lawsuit against his former Fleetwood Mac bandmates.

Following Buckingham’s surprise firing from Fleetwood Mac in January, the guitarist filed a lawsuit against the band in October, alleging breach of fiduciary duty and breach of oral contract, among other charges

“Fleetwood Mac strongly disputes the allegations presented in Mr. Buckingham’s complaint and looks forward to their day in court,” a rep for the band told Rolling Stone in October.

However, in an interview with CBS This Morning that aired Saturday – the guitarist’s first television interview since his dismissal – Buckingham said that the lawsuit was quietly settled a couple weeks ago.

“We’ve all signed off on something,” Buckingham said of the settlement. “I’m happy enough with it. I’m not out there trying to twist the knife at all. I’m trying to look at this with some level of compassion, some level of wisdom.”

Buckingham did not elaborate on the terms of the settlement. Buckingham declined to comment to Rolling Stone. A rep for Fleetwood Mac did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

During the CBS This Morning interview, Buckingham talked about the “visceral” feeling of being dismissed from the band – reportedly at the behest of Stevie Nicks – and said that, since his firing, he hasn’t spoken to any of his former bandmates except for Christine McVie, who reached out to Buckingham recently. Seductive track highlights new duets album from Fleetwood Mac duo

 

Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie performed their haunting new single “In My World” on Thursday’s Tonight Show.

Over a minimalist, fingerpicked guitar, Buckingham creates a spooky angst with his lead vocal, evolving from a hushed croon to an untamed wail. McVie sang in harmony throughout, and their four-piece backing band added to the choral-like swell of harmonies on the choruses.

The track concluded with an adorable display of camaraderie, as McVie offered Buckingham an encouraging hand on the shoulder during his visceral guitar solo.

“In My World” appears on the duo’s newly issued duets album, which also includes contributions from Fleetwood Mac members Mick Fleetwood and John McVie (but, notably, not Stevie Nicks).

Buckingham and Christine McVie will kick off a summer tour behind the LP June 21st in Atlanta. After their trek concludes in July, the duo will reconvene with Fleetwood Mac that month to co-headline the bi-coastal Classic East and Classic West festival.

It really should be a Fleetwood Mac album. The debut duo album from Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie sounds like a Fleetwood Mac album but is missing one essential voice: Stevie Nicks.

The unmistakeable groove of the Mac’s rhythm section of drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie is present and the distinctive voices of Buckingham and McVie blend as they always have in unique harmony.

The Buckingham and McVie record began as a tentative experiment to test the bonds — creative and personal — between the Mac’s guitarist and keyboardist as she rejoined the pop rock survivors after a 16-year absence.

McVie quit the Mac in 1998. Her father was ill, she had developed a fear of flying and could no longer live with the threat of Los Angeles’ earthquakes so returned to live in rural England.

Consequently she was musically out of shape when she reached out to Fleetwood to canvas a return to music and the band.

Before the reunited classic line-up headed out on the On With the Show tour in 2014, Buckingham and McVie convened at the Village Studios in LA where the Mac had made Tusk back in 1979.

“It didn’t really start off to be an album,” McVie says.

“Lindsey wanted to reconnect properly after my absence of so many years, so just prior to that long Fleetwood Mac tour we went into the studio for a week or so.

Chart feats and facts about the classic album, released in 1977.

This year marks 40 years since the release of Rumours, from Fleetwood Mac, one of the most revered and talked about albums ever.

From its iconic cover, to its songs, which you can still hear played regularly on the radio and all around you, Rumours fairly quickly established itself as a classic.

Almost as fascinating as the material itself was the backstory behind its production, with the band in love, at war and, shall we say, indulging in the full trappings of rockstar hedonism.

The album first entered the Official Albums Chart at 57 – it wasn’t unusual for albums to start low and climb back then – but rocketed 50 places into the Top 10 the following week. Rumours would spend a (non-consecutive) 44 weeks in the Top 10 and while it did a little bit of pogo-ing up and down, it never went lower than 15 for almost a year.

Surprisingly, perhaps, Rumours only managed one week at Number 1, in January 1978, dispatching Bread off the top before being deposed themselves by Abba’s The Album.

It also might shock you to know that the album’s four singles weren’t hugely successful. Lead single Go Your Own Way – which gained new fame years later when it was featured in a car advert – peaked at Number 38 in 1977, and while it has made a few reappearances in the Top 100 since downloads were counted toward the chart, it never bested that original high. In the words of 12-year-old finalist Grace VanderWaal, she’s “a true hero”

Leave it to Stevie Nicks to steal everyone’s thunder.

The former leading lady of Fleetwood Mac graced the stage on the season finale of America’s Got Talent Wednesday night, delivering a flawless performance of the band’s classic hit “Landslide.”

Nicks, now 68, was introduced by AGT finalist Grace VanderWaal, this season’s prodigy singer-songwriter, entertainment news site Hollywood Life reports.

Nicks is “a true hero of inspiration,” the 12-year-old VanderWaal said, before turning the mic over to the master.

At the end of her gripping performance, the audience erupted as Nicks hit her high note and brought the judges to their feet for a standing ovation.

The soft-rock icon left the stage only after a few words of encouragement for her young fan-girl.

“I have to say she reminds me a lot of me in a lot of ways,” Nicks said of VanderWaal. “She’s got it… Whatever happens, Grace is going to the top.”
