Fleetwood Mac were sitting around stoned in the studio one night with one of their engineers when they set about solving an arithmetic problem that had been niggling at them.

How much cocaine, they wondered, had drummer Mick Fleetwood put up his nose? Working on the premise he had taken an eighth of an ounce every day for 20 years, the sound engineer calculated that if you laid out the drug in a single snortable line, it would stretch for seven miles.

Rock ’n’ roll is full of such apocryphal stories, but as Fleetwood admits in a candid new memoir, this one is completely true. But then, this is the band that in 1977 gave the world Rumours, one of the best-selling albums ever, and almost died in the process.

The band have remained one of the favourites to top the bill at the event next year, though Michael Eavis has stated in recent weeks that the chances of the band headlining were looking unlikely.

All doubt has now been removed now though, with Fleetwood telling Chris Evans on BBC Radio 2 this morning (November 7) that the group will not be one of the three headliners.

“One of the things that I’d like to clear up is that we’re not playing Glastonbury,” he said. “A lot of folks think that we are, so loud and clear: We love Glastonbury and all the surrounding history of such a lovely festival but we’re not playing it.”

THERE IS A WORD THAT POPS UP MORE than once in conversation with Mick Fleetwood, a word that does not usually surface in conversations with other rock’n’roll stars. That word is “intact” — defined by at least one source as “not damaged or impaired in any way”.

It is a word that has special relevance when your band is a few years scant of celebrating its 50th anniversary, when it has sold more records than nearly anyone, when its colourful cast of characters comprises the most visible ongoing soap opera in the annals of rock, and time, as always, takes its inevitable toll.

To cut to the chase: everything in Mick Fleetwood’s world this August morning appears to be intact. He is, as always, tall, lanky, polite, happy to do whatever is required of him as a photo shoot takes place on the premises of this lovely large, hilariously photogenic Santa Monica estate, and in fine spirits. His is very popular band is rehearsing for their first tour with celebrated member Christine McVle in 16 years, and that is no small thing: This core group of five Fleetwood Mac members Fleetwood, McVle and her ex-husband John, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks got together in 1975, recorded a series of famous albums that sold billions, took rock’n’roll from the cover of Rolling Stone and plopped it onto People, influenced an entire generation of future white-winged doves enraptured by Ms Nicks, and then seemed to putter out in a strangely non-elegant manner in the mid ’90s when Dave Mason walked in. Cocaine, affairs, reckless spending – Mick Fleetwood was the epitome of the rock ’n’ roll egomaniac. How did he, and his band, survive?

I am waiting for Mick Fleetwood in a mansion that he has rented in Malibu. It is the size of a stately home. I am sitting in the kitchen, which is painted in ice-cream colours: pistachio, strawberry and vanilla. He arrives shower fresh. He is as long and thin as you imagine him.

In his new autobiography, Play On, Fleetwood says that he’s 6ft 6in. He looks even taller, languid in navy chinos, a blue striped shirt with epaulettes, a gold medallion, a perfectly trimmed beard and a burnt copper tan.

The medallion is a scarab made by a goldsmith in Canterbury, and, Fleetwood tells me, a symbol of immortality because Ancient Egyptian scarabs, which are still being dug up by archaeologists, “survive against hopeless odds”. You could say the same about his band, Fleetwood Mac.

Fleetwood Mac may have just started a mammoth tour of the United States, their first with songbird Christine McVie in 17 years, but Stevie Nicks has still managed to release a new solo album, this month.

24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault, is a collection of 14 songs from Nicks’ enormous back catalogue of demos that never made it onto her records- songs which were written between 1969 and 1995.

Recorded over a three-month period, Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart was once again on production duties. The eighth solo album from the Fleetwood Mac songbird is subtitled Songs from the Vault. It’s a collection of spruced-up versions of demos that Nicks recorded between 1969 and ’87. From the uptempo Starshine to the ploddy AOR of The Dealer it all feels rather half-baked, with only the title track having an ounce of the Mac’s magic. It’s not solely a vanity exercise (Nicks’s raw, nasal delivery is still distinctive), but as with most of these endeavours, there’s a reason why they were originally left in the vault. Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham has issued an update on the band’s new album.

The guitarist told The Wall Street Journal that he is working closely with Christine McVie on “profound” new music.

Buckingham discussed how McVie, who recently rejoined the band after 16 years apart, had sent him piano and voice demos, which he then developed.

“I took massive liberties with them,” he said.

“We never envisioned finishing the album in the short term. We set it aside. Stevie [Nicks] will come in and participate. I have material I had been working on.

“There’s no danger that it will slip between the tracks. It’s too profound to. Once we finish it we can think about going out and trying something new.”

Fleetwood Mac won’t stop. Still in the midst of their 40-date On With the Show tour, the group is adding a whopping 28 more shows for 2015 as fans celebrate a reunion with longtime, and long-absent, member Christine McVie.

This second leg will begin in January in St. Paul, Minn., and continue to New York, Atlantic City, Montreal, Chicago, Cleveland and St. Louis. Tickets for the new dates will go on sale Monday, Oct. 13 . A complete list of new dates and cities can be found below.

McVie’s return, after 16 years in retirement, has led to an expanded set list that includes Fleetwood Mac favorites like ‘You Make Loving Fun,’ ‘Little Lies’ and the show-closing ‘Songbird.’ She had been with the group since 1970 before leaving in 1998.

Lindsey Buckingham has described this tour as “a beautiful, profound, poetic new chapter now that this lady is back with us. And it’s a chapter that is going to go on for a while. A chapter that is going to yield much fruit. We are very, very excited.”

Return of the (Fleetwood) Mac! Christine McVie gives a Perfect performance as band’s classic line-up plays together for first time in 16 years on Today show

It has been 16 years since they played together as a band.

And it was like break never happened as Christine McVie and the rest of the most famous iteration of Fleetwood Mac appeared on the Today show on Thursday.

And the English-American group, who have sold more than 100 million albums, thrilled the fans with a performance of hits Little Lies, Gypsy, Go Your Own Way, and The Chain.

And Christine, 71, said a new piece of jewellery was a symbol of her intention to remain with the band for the foreseeable future.

She said: ‘Stevie brought me a bracelet not long ago, it was a chain, it broke, I had someone tie it on. It means the chain is never going to break again.’

And singer Nicks said she could not believe how well the band, who are embarking on a massive tour, have been playing since her return.

Stevie said: ‘She came back and just threw herself into it in such a strong and confident way, it was like a parallel universe that maybe we left.

‘I hear a count-off in songs and its almost like the 16 years she was gone didn’t exist.

The band played the Target Centre in Minneapolis

Fleetwood Mac have played their first full show with original band member Christine McVie since 1997.

The show took place at the Target Centre in Minneapolis, Minnesota this week (September 30) and comprised a career-spanning, 24-song set including ‘The Chain’ and ‘Gold Dust Woman’.

McVie was introduced by the band, saying “our songbird has returned”, while the keyboard player also took lead vocals on ‘You Make Loving Fun’ and a closing ‘Songbird’ among others.

Fleetwood Mac previously reunited without McVie, who left the band in 1998, for a large-scale tour including several dates at London O2 Arena in September 2013. At one O2 performance, however, McVie joined the band on stage for a rendition of ‘Don’t Stop’.

The show kicks off Fleetwood Mac’s On With The Show tour, which will travel across the US and Canada throughout the remainder of 2014.

No UK tour dates have been announced yet, however the group lead the bookies’ favourites to headline Glastonbury festival next year. Fleetwood Mac are tipped at 4/1, while other favourites to take the Pyramid Stage top billing include Muse, AC/DC and Kate Bush.
