“There really are dozens of songs,” drummer says of possible new studio album from ‘Rumours’ lineup

“People always say that corny thing: ‘Every picture tells a story,'” says Mick Fleetwood. “Well, they truly do! That’s what I love about them.” The 69-year-old Fleetwood, it should be noted, is certainly a fan of a good story. During a recent evening at Fleetwood’s on Front St., his restaurant and bar situated on the west Maui shoreline, the drummer regales Rolling Stone with an array of tales, from a dinner party with Willie Nelson at the island home of “supermensch” manager and agent Shep Gordon, to accompanying his daughters to a Justin Bieber concert (“He’s got some drum chops that I don’t have – a total shredder”) to a long-ago post-gig blowout in Honolulu that ended with Fleetwood, his mother and former Mac producer Richard Dashut covered in a whole lot of cake frosting – the aftermath of which is captured in a snapshot of a young Mick and mum drenched in buttercream that is hanging on a nearby wall.

Regarding his interest in photos, Fleetwood is here to discuss his newest endeavor, a partnership with the Morrison Hotel Gallery that has brought an outpost of the New York–based rock photography showroom to Maui. The new space, which opened in late June with a showing from acclaimed lens man Henry Diltz, is housed below the restaurant and adjacent to Fleetwood’s General Store (where one can purchase plenty of signed Mac memorabilia, among other items). “It makes sense to me to have it here,” Fleetwood says of the gallery. “Because it’s so connected to where I come from. After 16 years in the Kent wilderness, Christine McVie and Fleetwood Mac are creating magic once again… there’s even a new album in the pipeline. By Reyhaan Day

Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie offers me tea and a seat on a plush sofa. Among the things on her coffee table is a picture book called Crap Taxidermy. There’s a platinum record on the wall, and a stuffed dog looks out from under a side table next to a flickering fireplace.

“Do you like my dog? I found him in an antique shop – he’s 100 years old and I call him Jarvis.”

McVie is a dog person – she had two until recently. “I had a lovely time with them, but do I miss having dogs? Dogs tie you down. Who’s going to look after them when I go on tour?” she says. “I thought about getting a bird – a parrot perhaps – and teaching it to talk.” But McVie doesn’t want to be held back any longer. “I want my freedom now.”

As one fifth of Fleetwood Mac, Christine McVie has helped define popular music since the late 1960s. With her bandmates, McVie has written songs that are loved across generations. With 1977’s Rumours, Fleetwood Mac became superstars, experiencing both critical acclaim and public adoration. She explains that there is something about the band’s music, and Rumours in particular, that appeals to all ages. “Parents played the album at home, but kids gravitated to the album as well; and now some of their children are turned on to Fleetwood Mac.” It’s something that McVie is still surprised by. “It’s really quite amazing, the dichotomy of people coming to see the shows – it ranges anywhere from 80 to eight. By all accounts, Fleetwood Mac is one of the great rock ‘n’ roll bands. But there weren’t many people who would’ve predicted its classic lineup would be together and touring sports arenas in 2015.

Over the course of the 38 years since the release of the group’s masterpiece, 1977’s Rumours, Fleetwood Mac’s members have come and gone for reasons of madness, romantic turmoil, and creative tension. All the while, the rhythm section — drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie — has stuck it out.

Speaking by phone from a Dallas hotel room, Fleetwood says: “I will take some credit that I’ve always been, almost to the point of being obsessive, saying, ‘We’ve got to keep going. We’ve got to keep going, dude.'”

The band is currently in the middle of its hit U.S. tour, appropriately titled On With the Show. To catalog and dissect the members’ comings and goings is a book-length endeavor, so let’s start with the latest news. Last year, singer/keyboardist Christine McVie, former wife of the group’s bassist, returned to the fold, finally recreating the Fleetwood Mac from the height of its popularity between 1975 and 1987. There were reunions in the ’90s, and even an official break-up from 1995 to 1997, but the band could never stay together long enough for a new album featuring the treasured cast that produced the self-titled “White Album,” Rumours, Tusk, Mirage, and Tango in the Night. Mick Fleetwood says Stevie Nicks has yet to contribute songs, but Lindsey Buckingham has ‘a great chunk of wonderful songs’

As ever, Fleetwood Mac seem unable to agree among themselves, though at least this time there are no blizzards of cocaine and bitter relationship splits involved. Earlier this year, Lindsey Buckingham – the band’s de facto leader – told PBS the group will end this year, or shortly afterwards.

But now drummer and founder Mick Fleetwood has said it may be “a couple of years” before they get round to releasing the album Buckingham insists will be their swansong. Fleetwood says the band’s touring has got “in a good way, out of control” and so they have been unable to finish the album.

Fleetwood told ABC Radio (via Classic Hits): “We’re building up this whole sort of dossier of material, a glut of stuff.” Buckingham apparently “has a great chunk of wonderful songs pretty flushed out and finished”, and the only thing missing is new material from Stevie Nicks, who has been ambivalent about committing to a new record.

Still, Fleetwood said: “My inclination is, the music will not be wasted. It will come out one way or another. I truly hope and I quietly believe it will be Fleetwood Mac, and Stevie will do some lovely stuff, and within the next couple of years we will get that done.”

Fleetwood Mac have been touring heavily over the last year, with many more shows to come this year – with Christine McVie back in the band playing keyboards, which also widens their choice of material. In recent years, with McVie absent, the band have chosen not to play her songs.

The band come to the UK this summer for a series of dates, including a headline show at the Isle of Wight festival.

Fleetwood Mac have almost finished eight songs for a possible new album. The new recordings feature Christine McVie but not yet Stevie Nicks, who has been absent due to other commitments. “The chemistry was just unbelievable,” Lindsey Buckingham has said.

Minus Nicks, Fleetwood Mac spent two months at Village Recorder studio, in Los Angeles, working in the same room in which they recorded their 1979 album Tusk. “We’re all very excited about [the new music],” Buckingham told Billboard in a recent interview. “Knowing me, I’m going to be pushing for a double album.” Though eight tracks are “75% done”, they are now putting the sessions on pause as McVie returns home to England. The group will reunite for live rehearsals at the end of July, ahead of their world tour, and are unlikely to release anything before 2015. He leans forward and side by side, they listen to the playback of “Too Far Gone,” a danceable new Fleetwood Mac song they’ve written together over the last few weeks at a West Los Angeles recording studio.

“This was a great collaboration,” Buckingham said. “I had a track without any singing on it, and she wrote the song over it.”
