Reunited for a mammoth tour, Fleetwood Mac are now planning an album. But for all their attempts to put on a show, they are still riven by backstage tensions

Forty years after the line-up that conquered the world with Rumours first came together, Fleetwood Mac are still having problems agreeing on anything much. The return to the fold 16 months ago of Christine McVie, after an absence of 16 years, is one development they all speak positively about, with none of the usual caveats and festering agendas.

“There’s Stevie on one side of the spectrum,” says Lindsey Buckingham, the band’s coiled, restless, 65-year-old musical director and, what seems like a lifetime ago, Stevie Nicks’s boyfriend, “and me kind of on the other, in terms of sensibilities. Christine sort of bridges that gap.”

Where Buckingham talks in the clinical manner of a scientist, Nicks dives right in. “Christine’s coming back was like the return of my best friend after years away. It’s much more fun now. ISLE of Wight Festival organiser John Giddings broke down in tears when he discovered Fleetwood Mac had agreed to headline his bash.

Fleetwood Mac liveThe American musical legends will close the Main Stage on the Sunday when they play the event for the first time.The Little Lies band are rumoured to have turned down Glastonbury for the opportunity to perform at the festival which takes place between June 11-14.

Giddings revealed he started to sob after receiving email confirmation that the group would be topping the bill at his annual musical gathering.

He said: “I was standing in my bedroom and I was too scared to open the email because I was convinced it was going to say: ‘Thank’s very much, but no thanks’.

“It came from their manager and their agent. I had gone directly to their manager because their is more than one with five people being in the band.

“He said I had no chance. So I tried to surround them all and talk them all into it at the same time.

“I started crying when I read the email. I read it out to my wife. It was a magic moment. Saturday morning, 10.30.”

CHRISTINE McVie’s return to Fleetwood Mac has made many people extremely happy — none more so than the other members of Fleetwood Mac.

At one point during her 16-year sabbatical from Fleetwood Mac bandmate Stevie Nicks straight up offered McVie $5 million right there and then if she’d rejoin the band.

“I said ‘Is that all!,” McVie laughs. “I’m only worth $5 million?!”

It’s worth noting that 40 US dates of their On With the Show tour since McVie officially rejoined in January 2014 generated over US$74 million, and they’ll at least triple that when they spend most of this year touring before winding up in Australia and New Zealand in November.

Once she was back in Mac, Nicks gave her friend a silver chain, a metaphorical gift that McVie says echoes the sentiment of the band’s classic The Chain because “the chain of the band will never be broken” then she adds “not by me anyways. The dreams of thousands of Fleetwood Mac fans – not to mention key estranged member Christine McVie – will soon be coming true: the valued singer, songwriter and keyboard player will be rejoining her ex-husband John McVie and their fellow MacMembers Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, for a series of dates in Australia and New Zealand in October and November.

The rock royals had to cancel their sold-out 2013 Australian tour when John McVie was diagnosed with cancer but the bassist has since made enough of a recovery to play live again – hence this tour’s title On with the Show. At the time Christine McVie was still no longer officially in the band she had left in 1998, but had rejoined them onstage in London for a one-off performance of Don’t Stop (which she wrote) mere months before John’s diagnosis.

By all accounts, Fleetwood Mac is one of the great rock ‘n’ roll bands. But there weren’t many people who would’ve predicted its classic lineup would be together and touring sports arenas in 2015.

Over the course of the 38 years since the release of the group’s masterpiece, 1977’s Rumours, Fleetwood Mac’s members have come and gone for reasons of madness, romantic turmoil, and creative tension. All the while, the rhythm section — drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie — has stuck it out.

Speaking by phone from a Dallas hotel room, Fleetwood says: “I will take some credit that I’ve always been, almost to the point of being obsessive, saying, ‘We’ve got to keep going. We’ve got to keep going, dude.'”

The band is currently in the middle of its hit U.S. tour, appropriately titled On With the Show. To catalog and dissect the members’ comings and goings is a book-length endeavor, so let’s start with the latest news. Last year, singer/keyboardist Christine McVie, former wife of the group’s bassist, returned to the fold, finally recreating the Fleetwood Mac from the height of its popularity between 1975 and 1987. There were reunions in the ’90s, and even an official break-up from 1995 to 1997, but the band could never stay together long enough for a new album featuring the treasured cast that produced the self-titled “White Album,” Rumours, Tusk, Mirage, and Tango in the Night. On Sunday, the Erwin Center welcomes back the classic lineup of Fleetwood Mac: Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. This lineup of the group, whose 1977 album “Rumors” is one of just eight albums to have sold at least 40 million copies, last played the Austin concert arena in 1982, a show we discuss in detail in the Austin360 section of Sunday’s American-Statesman.

We spoke by telephone on Thursday with Lindsey Buckingham, who offered a good bit of detail about the full band’s current reunion as well as some background about their past. What follows is an assemblage of highlights from that conversation.

Austin360/American-Statesman: Four of you had been touring and recording off and on since the 1997 full-band reunion, but this is Christine McVie’s first reappearance since 1998. Why did she decide to return for this tour?

Lindsey Buckingham: When she left, I think she really was just looking for a change. And there certainly has been precedent for this fivesome to have made exits and returns. I did that myself after producing the “Tango in the Night” album and then did not do the tour. That was for other reasons at the time. But I think with Christine, she was just at a point in her life where she was kind of tired of the whole discipline of recording and writing and touring, and was feeling somewhat ungrounded by that. She’d had a series of relationships that hadn’t held for her, and I think she put some of that down to the kind of life she had to lead and what she had to prioritize. I mean, I’m sure it was way more complex. But basically, back then, she burned all of her bridges in Los Angeles. Midway through Fleetwood Mac’s Pinnacle Bank Arena concert Saturday night, drummer Mick Fleetwood suddenly became ill.

“Mick is really sick,” Stevie Nicks told the crowd, adding that Fleetwood was backstage throwing up. “We feel terrible, but we can’t really make him play. Give us a minute, and we’ll figure out what to do.”

That turned out to be playing two more songs.

A drum tech named Steve took over Fleetwood’s kit for “Go Your Own Way,” which is usually the song the band plays before two encores.

Then, after a short break, Christine McVie returned to the stage at a grand piano, playing and singing “Songbird” accompanied by guitarist Lindsey Buckingham.

FLEETWOOD MAC could be calling it quits before getting restarted with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham believing their latest reunion tour will be their last.

News of their current On With The Show tour caused a particular stir after it was announced that keyboardist Christine McVie would be rejoining following a 16-year absence.

And though the group have also revealed plans to release their first new album in 12 years Lindsey, 65, is doubtful that this reconciliation signals a fresh start.

He says: “If you think of this tour as the beginning of the last act. That’s how it feels. The album would be a beautiful way to kind of wrap up this last act.”

Formed in London in 1967 by drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie, the band went through a number of line-up changes before settling on the combination with Lindsey, Christine and singer Stevie Nicks in 1974.

Widely considered the definitive incarnation of the band, they achieved great success with albums such as Rumours before Christine announced an early retirement in 1998.

While the band members had a turbulent working relationship throughout, Lindsey admits time apart has healed old wounds and recent recording sessions have been a success.

“We went in the studio for two months and came up with probably the best group of songs that we’ve done in years.”

Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham says that the band is entering its ‘last act’

Fleetwood Mac may be heading into their final year. According to the band’s guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, the group will cease to operate in 2015 or soon afterwards. He told the American TV channel PBS that the forthcoming Fleetwood Mac album and tour would be their “last act”.

2014 was a big year for Fleetwood Mac: the original keyboardist and songwriter Christine McVie rejoined after quitting the band in 1998. They played a series of acclaimed gigs, and next year bring their On With the Show tour to the UK – including a headline slot at the Isle of Wight festival. There is also the promise of the band’s first album since 2003, which will feature a number of new songs that McVie and Buckingham have worked on together.

“She gave me a bunch of stuff to take home,” said Buckingham. “I worked on it, came back, and she loved it. We went into the studio and came out with the best songs we’ve co-written in years.” He added: “Christine really fills the gap of the polarity that might exist otherwise, and helps things breathe.”

However, Buckingham did admit to being sceptical when he first heard that McVie wanted to return. He said: “My initial reaction was, ‘OK – we have to take this with baby steps.’ The want to return doesn’t mean you can repeat history; it doesn’t mean all the tools, all the reference points are still there for it all to work.”

The current Fleetwood Mac lineup is the same one that oversaw the band’s most successful period, including the trio of classic 1970s albums Fleetwood Mac, Rumours and Tusk, as well as the poppy 1980s hit Tango in the Night.

Buckingham concluded: “We’re going to continue working on the new album, and the solo stuff will take a back seat for a year or two. A beautiful way to wrap up this last act.”
